In public safety, trialling cutting-edge technology can often be stalled by traditional processes and complex requirements.
Through Hatch's Dimension X open innovation challenge, international startups and operational end-users in Singapore rapidly validate tech through proofs-of-concept (POCs) to fast-track real-world solutions.
In Cohort 6, three startups – Eztia Materials, Brelyon and Oversight – collaborated directly with HTX teams and operational end-users to explore how emerging technologies could address practical public safety challenges in Singapore.
For public safety officers operating in Singapore's hot and humid climate, heat strain directly impacts physical endurance, vigilance, and job performance. Working alongside HTX’s Human Factors & Simulation (HFS) Centre of Expertise (CoE) and the Singapore Prison Service, startup Eztia co-designed and tested innovative passive cooling garments.
Reuben Leong, Assistant Director of Operations Logistics at the Singapore Prison Service, highlighted that without Hatch, the team would have continued pursuing traditional approaches. By testing both the scientific performance and operational fit in real-world settings, the team successfully prototyped a practical solution that enhances officer well-being. “Hatch made the process agile and efficient”, which “creates a new model for trialling emerging technologies in public safety” notes Tiffany Yeh, CEO of Eztia.
In high-stakes environments like major event security – such as the Formula 1 Marina Bay Street Circuit – Command, Control, and Communications (C3) systems require rapid, real-time data processing. HTX’s C3 CoE teamed up with two startups, Brelyon and Oversight, to modernise the C3 officer’s experience.
Brelyon introduced ultra-compact, high-ergonomic displays that compress heavy operator workstations without compromising visual performance. Simultaneously, Oversight developed a 3D digital twin platform that ingests live body-cam feeds, dispatch events, and spatial data to give commanders instant shared situational awareness. Together, both solutions were integrated into a unified proof-of-concept within just four months.
"There's now a unique opportunity with direct end-user pull that is actually sufficiently motivating systems integrators in unison," explains Alok Mehta, Co-Founder of Brelyon.
The key to success in public safety innovation lies in close co-design and transparency. As Lloyd Ng, HTX engineer in HFS CoE, emphasises, startups should bring clear test plans, stay transparent about trade-offs, and work hand-in-hand with operational partners. Oversight CEO Gal Dalali sums it up simply: "Bring bold ideas, iterate with operators, and focus on mission impact."
