When emergency first responders deploy to high-stakes situations, every second counts. Traditional robotics often require lengthy setup times and pre-mapped environments, leading to delays that officers simply cannot afford in high-risk, rapidly evolving environments. Through Hatch’s Dimension X Cohort 5, HTX’s Robotics, Automation and Unmanned Systems Centre of Expertise (CoE) partnered with cutting-edge robotics startups to solve these real-world challenges.
Addressing the need for quick deployment, startup Field AI collaborated with HTX to test autonomous navigation in unmapped environments. Developing "intelligent brains" for autonomous systems, Field AI demonstrated a complex chemical spill response scenario.
Using their software, quadruped robots successfully navigated through unmapped 3D spaces to locate spill sources and potential casualties without human pre-mapping. "Hatch strikes a very unique balance between pragmatism and having operational missions live and running, but also having cutting-edge technology that can actually be deployed today to help the Home Team," shares Shayegan Omidshafiei, Chief Scientist at Field AI.
In parallel, General Robotics also worked directly with the HTX Robotics, Automation & Unmanned Systems CoE to explore the frontier of humanoid robotics. Using their General Robot Intelligence Development platform(GRID), the team tackled complex physical tasks, including precise elevator button pressing and corridor navigation.
While humanoid form factors present distinct engineering challenges, platforms like GRID streamline software deployment to achieve high precision in real-world environments. As Dinesh Narayanan, Co-Founder of General Robotics, highlights: "It’s not research for the sake of research; it’s research with a very practical goal – the safety of citizens here in Singapore."
Through close collaboration, startup founders and HTXengineers are proving that co-innovation truly accelerates real impact. Theoverarching vision remains clear: building intelligent, reliable roboticpartners that can enter hazardous environments alongside human officers, keeping first responders and the community safer.
